about

This piece was composed in 1963 by my grandfather, Lyle King. As a composer and choir director, he worked on it over the course of 50 years. He then played it on the piano for me in person in 2015. I was so taken by it that it stuck with me, and in 2018 I asked him to send me the sheet music for me to perform.

To learn the piece, I transcribed each voice into MIDI notation so I could rehearse each part individually using virtual instrumentation. Along the way, the transcription forced me to learn how to read music, which I had always been reluctant to do. I then recorded myself singing each part (Tenor I, Tenor II, Baritone, Bass), with three separate takes for each part. This is what gives it a choir-like feel: twelve recordings of one person. This is the only recording of it this choral piece performed, to my knowledge.

In December of 2018, I send the recording to my grandfather. He was very pleased when he heard it, and it continued a wonderful conversation we have had for years about the nature of music, spirituality, and "the ineffable." When I asked if I could share it online for free, he said, "get some money for it if you can," which led to plenty of humor about striking it rich. The text comes from the Book of Common Prayer in the Episcopal Church, which is where I first learned how to sing alongside my grandfather and the rest of our family.

Saint Andrew's Day is November 30th.

lyrics

Almighty God, who didst give such grace unto thy holy Apostle Saint Andrew that he readily obeyed the calling of thy Son Jesus Christ and followed him without delay, grant unto us all that we, being called by thy holy word, may forthwith give up ourselves obediently to fulfill thy holy commandments, through the same Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
